Downtown Cape is a great place to live with so many places to visit and support - which not only helps the local economy but gives Cape its distinct character.  Maybe that is one of the reasons why Architectural Digest recently named Cape Girardeau as the prettiest town in Missouri.

So hop on the local luv train - there's a lot to luv and support in Missouri's prettiest town.  Here are some of my favorites.

FAVORITE PIZZA - MINGLEWOOD BREWERY
Good pizza to me is all about a thin, chewy crust and a red sauce that's not too sweet and tastes like fresh tomatoes.  This is why Minglewood's pizza is my favorite in Cape.  I create my own pie with quality ingredients such as carmelized onions, kalamata olives, mushrooms and tomatoes.  Artisan pizza goodness topped with a five cheese blend - pairs well with Minglewood's own 'Just a Little Light India Pale Ale'.

FAVORITE ICE CREAM - CREME & CONE
I previously did an ice cream 'crawl' where I went to five different downtown shops and had ice cream cones at each one and they all were delicious.  The fresh blackberry ice cream at "Creme & Cone" on Spanish street was my favorite - creamy with locally grown blackberries.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP - ANNIE LAURIE'S
I wanted to decorate my new flat with finds from local shops. The first time I walked into Annie Laurie's I knew - this place had me at eclectic.  I really have no strategy when I decorate.  I just buy things I love regardless of a color scheme or a certain look.  Nothing matches in my flat - I love color and I think I have every color from the 64 box of crayons represented in my home.  Maybe I do have a decorating concept - eclectic!  The desk pictured above is one of the first items that I bought at Annie Laurie's - it was important to love the desk I write on.  And I love this desk.  And shopping at Annie Laurie's.

FAVORITE ITALIAN RESTAURANT - GABRIEL'S FOOD + WINE
What sets Gabriel's apart from other Italian restaurants is the freshness of their pasta and how the chef does an amazing job of pairing the pasta with the right sauce.  A good example is the Gnocchi Bolognese - I love gnocchi, but when reading the menu I thought the sauce would be too much for the small dumplings.  Man was I wrong - the beef tenderloin, smoked pancetta, and Italian sausage melded perfectly with the gnocchi.  And a glass of the New Zealand sauvignon blanc elevates the flavors - pair it!

FAVORITE DIVE BAR - RUDE DOG PUB

The note on the jukebox that warns the customer about selecting "bad" music might keep you from playing a couple of tunes. On the plus side, they do have Lagunitas IPA in bottles, Fat Tire on tap to quench your thirst, and a million and one interesting things to look at.  Cheap beer, relaxed bartenders, mostly good music, and fun bar relics = the perfect dive bar.
It's "Down on Main Street" - I wonder if playing a Bob Seger song on the jukebox would get you.....

FAVORITE DOWNTOWN BUILDING - SOUTHEAST MISSOURIAN
There are many interesting and unique buildings in downtown Cape.  My favorite is the Southeast Missourian building on the corner of Lorimier and Broadway streets.  Colorful tiles, arched windows surrounded by red brick, and second floor blue boxes that pop with red flowers.  Architectural Digest should name this the prettiest building in Missouri to go with the prettiest town designation.  I smile whenever I walk past this beauty.

FAVORITE WINGS - HOTSHOTS SPORTS BAR & GRILL
My five criteria checklist for good chicken wings: 1) cold beer, 2) crispy with bone in, 3) bold and tangy buffalo sauce with just the right amount of heat, 4) quality blue cheese, and 5) sports on the TV.  Hotshots hits all the marks and then some.

FAVORITE CATFISH - BROUSSARD'S

I've had a few folks ask me if I tried the Alligator Etouffe at Broussard's and it's on my list.  However, I just can't get past ordering the catfish po' boy as it reminds me of the delicious ones I had in New Orleans.  Perfectly fried with Louisiana remoulade sauce, tomato, lettuce and a fresh roll - everything that makes a catfish po' boy scrumptious.  Later 'Felix de Gator'.

FAVORITE COFFEE - DYNAMITE COFFEE
Making the perfect caffe latte is an art form.  And the coffee artists at Dynamite Coffee have it on canvas -  quality espresso and frothy fresh milk steamed to the perfect temperature with the right amount of foam on top.  I've been ordering the iced latte due to the summer heat, but I will be back to the warmer version as soon as the weather mellows.  Nothing says autumn more than a chill in the air, golden leaves and a warm quality cup of coffee.
